Shobha Gasti: From Margins to Mainstream - Breaking the Devadasi Chains
Devadasi Reformer & Community Champion
Lighting Paths Through Education
Emerging from Belagavi, Karnataka, Shobha Gasti has dedicated her life to uplifting former Devadasi women - once trapped in ritualistic oppression - by advocating for their rights, dignity, and access to education.
Building a Lifeline: MASS
In 1997, Shobha founded the NGO *Mahila Abhivrudhi Mattu Samrakshana Samasthe* (MASS), working across **360 villages** in Karnataka to rehabilitate and mainstream over **3,600 former Devadasis**. MASS helped secure pensions for women over 45 and provided pathways for their full social inclusion, while also campaigning against child marriage, trafficking, and abuse.

Expanding the Circle with AMMA Foundation
In 2017, Shobha transitioned her work into the *AMMA Foundation*, where she continues holistic interventions - such as street theatre, awareness campaigns, tailored self-help programs, and advocacy - to dismantle systemic barriers faced by Devadasi women and their children.
Recognition That Reaffirms
On International Women’s Day 2022, Shobha Gasti was honored with the **Nari Shakti Puraskar**, India’s highest civilian award for women, in recognition of her tireless efforts to empower marginalized communities and advocate for girls' rights and dignity.
Enduring Impact
Today, Shobha continues to be a powerful voice for change - ensuring that Devadasi families are seen, respected, and offered equal opportunity. Her work reminds us that justice begins with giving every child a chance to learn and belong.
Education is the key to breaking cycles of injustice - without knowledge, our children remain invisible.
